World War II Era Japanese Paper Currency Set
If you were ever looking for a single set that told the story of Japan during and after World War II, this is that set! You’ll receive four notes printed between 1942 and 1946.
- The first is a 1942 $10 Occupation “Banana” Note, issued by the Japanese as they took over islands in the Pacific. The nickname is a reference to a banana tree motif depicted on the note.
- Next comes a 1944 5 Sen Note, printed in Japan to help reduce the minting of coins. Brutal losses in Imperial Japan’s colonial empire made transporting the metal needed to strike coins next to impossible in the last years of the war.
- The following year, the 1945 10 Sen Japanese Military Payment Certificate was printed, first in the United States and then Japan, for Allied units following the Japanese surrender.
- The final piece of this set is a 1946 Japan 1 Sen Note, issued by the Bank of Japan under General Douglas MacArthur’s provisional government, which occupied Japan until its sovereignty was restored in 1952.
Each note in this vintage 1942–1946 Japan Paper Currency Four-Piece Set comes in Fine to About Uncirculated (F–AU) condition. All that history in just four notes!
