The Royal Mint Celebrates the Kings Coronation in Gold and Silver
Introducing the Crowned Portrait to Be Used Only on Coronation Releases
The first coronation of the 21st century, the coronation of the U.K.’s King Charles III, is a historic moment in British history, and this coin commemorates the significant event in grand fashion.
King Charles III’s coronation, the first coronation of a British Monarch in nearly 70 years, took place on May 6th, 2023 at Westminster Abbey, where he was officially crowned King, and Camilla was crowned Queen Consort. The coronation ceremony played out in front of about 2,000 invited guests, and a global audience of over 20 million watching on TV or livestream. The Coronation ceremony consisted of King Charles III taking an oath, being blessed with holy oil, and receiving the Crown Jewels of the United Kingdom. After Charles and Camila’s crowning, members of the Royal Family traveled to Buckingham Palace in the Gold State Coach constructed for George III in 1762, pulled by six Windsor gray horses. Following the state procession to Buckingham Palace, Charles and Camilla appeared on the palace's rear and front balconies for a grand exit.
The Tudor Crown, itself a stunning work of art, appears on both sides of these coins—worn by King Charles III on the obverse, and atop the Royal Arms on the reverse. The Crown is one of the most significant symbols of the British monarchy, symbolizing power, history, tradition and authority over the realm. It has a rich history dating back to 1661, and has been used during many of the most important moments in British history, including the coronations of kings and queens and royal weddings. During the Coronation ceremony, the crown is placed on the monarch's head as a symbol of the ascension to the throne, and of the duty to serve the people.
Struck in Pure Gold and Fine Silver
You have your choice of coins struck in a kilo of 99.9% gold, or in five ounces, two ounces or one ounce of high-purity 99.99% pure gold (£1,000, £500, £200 and £100 Great Britain legal tender, respectively). Or choose coins struck in five ounces or two ounces of 99.9% fine silver (£10 and £5 Great Britain legal tender respectively).
Proofs Offer Better Quality and a Higher Degree of Scarcity
Proofs, like these, are struck to a much higher standard of beauty, quality, and craftsmanship than circulated and uncirculated coins. Proof planchets (blanks) are specially treated, hand-polished, and cleaned to ensure high-quality strikes, then fed into presses fitted with specially polished dies, and struck at least twice—unlike regular coins which are struck only once. The extra strikes give proofs a glamorous shine and make intricate, razor-sharp details of the design pop against polished, mirror-like fields. While regular coins are struck on high-speed presses by the thousands, proofs are individually struck by highly skilled artisans focused on creating masterpieces. Collectors love proofs not only because they’re the best quality, but also because of their relative scarcity since proof mintages are typically only a fraction as large as non-proof coins.
The one-ounce gold and two-ounce silver Coronation Proofs here feature reverse proof finishes with mirrored details and frosted fields.
