The legendary 1878 Morgan Dollar reimagined by America's most prolific modern coin artist.

An Exclusive Partnership with America’s Master Coin Designer: Through its exclusive partnership with John Mercanti, America’s foremost modern coin designer, GOVMINT introduces the Mercanti Morgan: a once-private design unseen for decades, now brought to life for the first time and available solely to GOVMINT collectors.
Kept in his private archives, this design was Mercanti's personal tribute to George T. Morgan, a reimagining of America's most iconic 19th-century coin through the eyes of its most accomplished modern artist. Now, that long-unseen masterpiece is being struck for the first time as an exclusive release.

The 2026 Mercanti Morgan features a left-facing profile of Liberty crowned with a classical coronet inscribed with "LIBERTY," framed by 13 stars. Her flowing hair and Greco-Roman elegance evoke timeless ideals of freedom and virtue.
The reverse showcases a boldly reimagined eagle spreading its wings in a design reminiscent of Mercanti's "Heraldic Eagle" from his Type I American Silver Eagle, completing a design rooted in 19th-century grandeur elevated by Mercanti's signature detail.
This is a passion project born from one legendary engraver's deep respect for another. Now struck for the first time, these designs answer the ultimate numismatic question: What if the 1878 Morgan Dollar had been reimagined by the most prolific engraver in U.S. Mint history? The result bridges 150 years of American artistry in precious metal.

Struck in the United States of America and released on behalf of the Ascension Islands, these legal-tender coins are struck in pure 99.99% gold or 99.9% fine silver. Dual ultra-high relief details provide technological precision that 1800s engravers could only dream about.
Each coin features a striking proof finish, with glossy, mirror-like fields contrasted against frosted design elements.

From 1876 to 1925, George T. Morgan served as Assistant Engraver at the U.S. Mint, leaving a lasting mark on American coinage. He designed the famed Morgan Dollar, blending classical artistry with bold design. His vision of Lady Liberty became the face of a nation’s currency, a design that has endured for generations as one of the most beloved in numismatic history.

From 2006 to 2010, John M. Mercanti served as the 12th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, becoming the most prolific coin engraver in American history. He created more than 100 designs, including the legendary Type I American Silver Eagle reverse. A master storyteller in metal and light, he carried forward Morgan’s legacy while shaping a powerful one of his own.
