Silver Coin Depicts Mexico's Father Of The Nation
This big, bold, and beautiful silver coin is a tribute to Mexican independence and offers an excellent way to add vintage world coinage to your personal collection. About the size of an American Silver Eagle, this 1951–1954-dated Mexico 5 Pesos coin was struck in more than a half-ounce of 72% fine silver and features the portrait of Miguel Hidalgo, a leader in the Mexican War of Independence. It is due to his portrait for which the coin gets its name: the Hidalgo.
One Of Mexico's Most Legendary Heroes
Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla was one of Mexico's most legendary heroes in the revolutionary war with Spain. Hidalgo (1753–1811) was a Catholic priest who ignited the Mexican War of Independence on September 16, 1810, with his passionate Grito de Dolores (Cry of Delores) when he rang the bell of his church in Dolores, Mexico and gave the call to arms that triggered the Mexican War of Independence. His plea for the end of Spanish rule led to a massive rebellion with farmers, indigenous people, and peasants rising up against their European rulers. Though executed just a year later, his bold leadership and sacrifice earned him the title "Father of the Nation," as his actions set the stage for Mexico's eventual independence in 1821. Today, a statue of Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla stands in front of the church in Dolores Hidalgo, Guanajuato and each year on the night of September 15–the eve of Mexican Independence Day–Mexico's president shouts a version of "el Grito" from the balcony of the National Palace in Mexico City that is broadcast throughout the country.
