Get Yours Now in Ultra High Relief

George T. Morgan designed the most famous silver coin in the world: the Morgan Silver Dollar, first issued by the United States Mint in 1878. But that same year, the U.S. Mint struck a second Morgan design: a Gold Pattern Proof, now known as Judd-1582. This pattern coin was minted to explore a version of Morgan’s famous design as a $10 Gold Eagle.

A Famous "What If" Now Available For Your Collection
As history shows, the mint decided not to go with Morgan's Gold Eagle design. However, you can still travel to Washington, D.C. and see the original pattern as part of the Smithsonian® National Numismatic Collection… or you can take it home with these incredible new offerings!

These limited-edition gold and silver reverse proofs bring Morgan’s Gold Eagle to life in a way you’ve never seen it before—as stunning double-thick Piedfort, Ultra High Relief Reverse Proofs! Each piece features Morgan’s original designs, with two small changes: dual dates of 1878 and 2020 on the obverse, and the word “Eagle” on the reverse in place of the original pattern’s legal-tender value.

Struck Using Equipment Morgan Himself May Have Used
Struck by the Commonwealth Mint, these Gold Pattern Proofs were created using some of the original minting equipment from the Birmingham Mint—the very same mint where George T. Morgan served as an apprentice right before he migrated to the United States! Imagine holding a piece in your hand struck from Morgan's own designs using equipment Morgan himself may have used. This is what coin collecting is all about!

Ultra High Relief Piedfort Reverse Proofs
Not only were these historic pieces struck with some of the Birmingham Mint’s original equipment, but they come struck for the first time ever as double-thick Piedfort Proofs, adding significant heft to their weight. While still conforming to the same diameter as the original half-ounce gold and Silver Dollar diameters, these double-thick planchets now allow for the proofs to be struck in double-sided Ultra High Relief Reverse Proof condition, with highly detailed, mirrored designs that tower over frosty fields.

This release marks the very first time that a Smithsonian® release has been struck in Ultra High Relief on both sides of the proof.

Had these minting technologies been available, it’s possible that the original patterns struck to test the design could have featured such incredible contrast. These proofs are the epitome of the minter’s art, and they can be yours—if you act now.
