Rare One-Year-Only 1954 Gold From the Rothschild & Sons Swiss Bank Hoard

Ask any collector, and they’ll tell you that the South African Gold Krugerrand, first struck in 1967, was the world’s first one-ounce gold trade unit coin. But while it may be the world’s first modern bullion piece struck for public use, another gold trade coin was minted 13 years prior in Morocco!

Struck with an incredibly limited mintage of just 10,000 pieces, this 1954 Gold 500 Dirhams was created just for Nathan Mayer Rothschild & Sons (known today as Rothschild & Co) to use in the multinational investment bank & financial services company’s business transactions.

As most have since been melted down, this coin is an incredible find — especially like this one certified and graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) in Uncirculated Mint State-62 (MS62) condition. NGC has graded only 266 of these coins, and this one is tied for the finest known. Finding this coin in this condition is so rare that the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) has graded just eight coins higher.

The coin itself is an example of the mastery of numismatic art. The obverse features a full figure of Roman god Hercules leaning on a club with a robe folded over his left arm. Reminiscent of Michelangelo’s David, the coin commands respect with its gold heft and purity. Struck in one ounce of highly pure 91.67% fine gold, the coin’s reverse includes its gold weight and purity along with the N.M. Rothschild & Sons stamp.

Your coin will arrive sealed in an acrylic holder with a label designating it as coming from the 1954 N.M. Rothschild & Sons Swiss Bank Hoard. It’s a rare piece few collectors ever get the chance to own!
