1726–1794 Boston Tea Party Coin & Stamp Set
Boston Tea Party Coin and Stamp Set
On December 16, 1773, patriots in Boston, Massachusetts stormed a ship carrying crates of British tea and dumped its contents into the harbor. This act of defiance was a protest against the ridiculous taxes imposed on the colonists by Great Britain, including a high tax on the popular drink. The Boston Tea Party is one of the defining moments in early American history, and in the pockets of those patriots were “pennies” like this Dutch Duit struck between 1726 and 1794. The colonists had no coinage of their own, and so foreign currencies filled their coin purses.
This coin comes in a special folder along with a set of four U.S. postage stamps issued in 1973 for the 200th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party. These stamps are unique in that each features its own design entity, and when combined all four complete the scene from that night in 1773, when enraged colonists dressed as Mohawk Indians dumped chests of tea from British ships into Boston harbor in protest of the English-levied tax.
