A Silver Tribute To One Of Europe's Oldest Trading Guilds
All it takes is a quick walk around Kampen, a centuries-old Hanseatic city in the Netherlands, and you can tell that the town has a long history of trade and transportation. The Church of St. Nicholas, the Gothic palace, the town gates, and a recreation of the medieval trading ship De Kamper Hanze Kogge are just a few of the more than 500 monuments located in and around this municipality that's basically an open-air museum!
Northern Europe's Famous Hanseatic League
With a history that dates back to the Middle Ages, Kampen was first mentioned around 1277, though wooden buildings had been erected on the site as early as 1150. Strategically located at the lower reaches of the River Ijssel, the city became a leading commercial center in the Netherlands until being outpaced by Amsterdam as the Renaissance spread across Northern Europe in the late 16th century. The city fathers of Kampen proved to be shrewd businessmen, voting in 1441 to join the Hanseatic network, an association of traders and affiliated cities with the shared goal of promoting and protecting trade. At its peak, the Hanseatic League consisted of 22 Dutch cities along with many other German, Danish, Norwegian, Swedish, and Belgian cities located mainly around the Baltic Sea. Their cooperative trading network created a successful flow for salt, fish, grains, wine, beer, and cloth, among other things.
Beautiful Restrike Of Kampen's Famous 1618 Florijn
Now, 800 years later, Royal Dutch Mint is celebrating Kampen and the Hanseatic League with this restrike of Kampen's famous 1618 Florijn that was used for trade across northern Europe in the west from the Netherlands, Scandinavia, and Britain through Kievan Rus in the east located in modern-day Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine. Struck in a full ounce of highly pure 99.9% fine silver, this non-legal tender round shows the City Arms of Kampen on the obverse and a Double-Headed Eagle on the reverse. The design has been altered slightly to include the 2023 year date on the obverse.

Each coin will also come beautifully housed in its original mint packaging that consists of a wood display box, illustrated shipper, and a numbered Certificate of Authenticity.
