Despite being a neutral country, the Netherlands was not spared from the bloody and horrifying brutality of World War II. That’s because Germany invaded the small nation in 1940, and during the next five years of occupation, nearly 200,000 Dutch civilians died at the hands of their Nazi oppressors.

Produced in .05 grams of highly pure 99.9% fine gold and approved by the Dutch Postal Service, this uplifting stamp honors the moment the Allies liberated the Netherlands in the spring of 1945 and pays tribute to the 75th Anniversary of Peace & Liberation. Measuring 40 mm x 30 mm, the stamp shows a touching scene of jubilant Dutch citizens celebrating their freedom after suffering through five years of German occupation while Allied Bombers fly overhead. On May 10, 1940, Dutch citizens were awakened to the sound of Nazi bombers flying overhead. They would soon recoil in terror with the news that bombers from Germany’s Luftwaffe had swarmed over the city of Rotterdam. The attack, known today as the Rotterdam Blitz, killed nearly 1,000 civilians and destroyed thousands of homes. The attack was followed by a ground assault by Adolf Hitler’s vaunted Wehrmacht. Within days, the Netherlands surrendered, thus beginning five years of occupation. Dutch citizens were driven from their homes, starved, and forced to work in Nazi factories. By the time the war mercifully came to an end in 1945, nearly three-quarters of the county’s Jewish population had been deported to concentration and extermination camps.
