2021 American Gold Eagle Proof Coins with Family of Eagles Reverse Design
The American Gold Eagle Proof is one of the most popular annual numismatic issues year in and year out. The series features a slight adaptation of what is widely considered the most beautiful design in the entire history of American numismatics. The proof finish makes that design stand out even more on this piece than on the business strike. Like its bullion counterpart, the coin is historically struck in four sizes: 1 oz, 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz, and 1/10 oz. Each piece is struck from .9167 fine gold. Unlike the business strikes, the proofs also bear a mint mark, the “W” of the West Point Mint.
History of the Series
The Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 was signed by President Ronald Reagan. The following year, the oldest of America’s modern precious metals series began. They included the American Gold Eagle and the American Gold Eagle Proof coins. These coins revived the iconic Saint-Gaudens designs, and tweaks of the coins have been limited to lettering. The bullion and proof coin will get a new reverse design for the first time in mid-2021! Early issues will feature the original Family of Eagles reverse design and later in the year the Proof series will transition to a new reverse design crafted by Jennie Norris of the United States Mint’s Artistic Infusion Program (AIP).
2021 American Gold Eagle Proof Coins with Original Reverse Design
The historic Double Eagle design of Augustus Saint-Gaudens returns to the obverse in 2021. Liberty holds her torch, a beacon of freedom, high and an olive branch off to her side as she stands facing the holder. She appears larger than life as the rays of the morning sun spread out behind her, and the Capitol Dome is rendered in miniature on the lower left. “LIBERTY” is inscribed at the top, and the date, “2021,” is noted on the right. Fifty stars represent the original states along the rim.
The reverse design, which is being replaced on the business strike, was created by Miley Busiek. It celebrates America’s national bird, the bald eagle. A male prepares to land in its nest with an olive branch. Below, its mate watches his return while tending to their young. The statutory mottoes, “E PLURIBUS UNUM” and “IN GOD WE TRUST,” are inscribed to the left and right. “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA” is inscribed on the rim at the top. Inscriptions on the bottom portion of the rim note the respective coin’s weight and face value.
