Martin Van Buren Silver Presidential Medals
Martin Van Buren was the first President who was born a citizen of the United States rather than a British subject. He was elected in 1836 but a financial panic cost him a second term. He ran for the office twice more, once for the Democratic nomination and once as the Free Soil candidate. This party opposed the expansion of slavery into new territories. Part of the Presidential Silver Medal Series, this medal will be struck from 1 oz of .999 fine silver and will have a matte finish.
History of the Silver Presidential Medal Series
What are today known as Presidential Medals were first known as “Peace Medals.” Early American Presidents gifted the medals to Native American leaders at events such as peace treaty signings. The initial run of Peace Medals ended with President Benjamin Harrison. The U.S. Mint restarted the program in 2018. Since the restart, the medals have been struck in .999 fine silver rather than bronze.
Van Buren Presidential Medal Designs
The obverse of the medal will feature a portrait of President van Buren. His name, “MARTIN VAN BUREN,” and title, “PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES,” will be inscribed on the rim along with the year that he took office, “A.D. 1837.”
The reverses of the Presidential Medal series so far have featured similar imagery of two shaking hands and the inscription, “PEACE AND FRIENDSHIP.” Slight variations exist amongst the issues, and the exact design that will appear on the Van Buren Silver Medal has yet to be revealed from the U.S. Mint.
