President Ronald Reagan signed the Liberty Coin Act into law July 9, 1985, which authorized the United States Mint to strike American’s new silver bullion coin. On October 29, 1986: U.S. Treasury Secretary James A. Baker III struck the initial one-dollar American Eagle Silver Bullion Coin, the first investment-grade silver bullion coin ever issued by the United States. Silver Eagles received a first-ever design change midway through 2021 in honor of the coin’s 35th anniversary. The new design is referred to as Type 2, to differentiate it from the original Type 1 design. The obverse design of both the Type 1 and Type 2 Silver Eagle features the classic and dignified “Walking Liberty” design created by Adolph A. Weinman. The word “LIBERTY” is inscribed above, and the year of minting is displayed below. Crafted by Emily Damstra, the Type 2 reverse design presents an elegant and detailed portrayal of the Heraldic Eagle. The eagle is shown in a close-up view, as it prepares to land. The design symbolizes strength, resilience, and a forward-looking perspective. The inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “1 OZ.
