The Last Aztec Emperor Makes A Triumphant Return

In 1947 and 1948, Mexico honored Cuauhtémoc, the last king of the Aztec Empire, by striking a legal-tender coin in one ounce of 90% fine Mexican silver. Cuauhtémoc, whose name means “one who has descended like an eagle,” ascended to the throne in 1520 at a time when the Aztec empire was being besieged by Spanish invaders from one side and ravaged by smallpox on the other. Just 25 years old when he assumed power, Cuauhtémoc reigned for only a year before surrendering the kingdom to Spanish Conquistador Hernán Cortés. Fearing Cuauhtemoc would lead a revolt, Cortés had the young king hanged to squash any thoughts of rebellion against Spanish rule.

A Tribute To Cuauhtémoc 500 Years After His Death

Now, 500 years since Cortés tortured and murdered the young king, Cuauhtémoc has returned on this fabulous coin that employes the same design used by the decades-old Mexican coin right down to the portrait of Cuauhtémoc that is reminiscent of Mesoamerican artwork. The impressive detail of the young Aztec King’s face and royal headgear are even more stunning thanks to the coin being struck with Ultra-High Relief (UHR) designs that tower above the surface of the coin.

Released on behalf of Niue, a small island nation in the South Pacific Ocean, this 2025-dated $2 legal-tender coin was struck in a Troy ounce of highly pure 99.9% fine silver. It also features the Emblem of Mexico and the Public Seal of Niue on the reverse.
