This COMIX™ Coin Is Simply Fantastic!

"It's Clobberin' Time!" is the catchphrase of the Fantastic Four's boulder-skinned strongman Ben Grimm, alias "The Thing," who uses the phrase whenever he's about to clobber some bad guy or evil super villain. And due to a recent sale of a The Fantastic Four #1 comic book, that phrase is more appropriate than ever. That's because a rare, highly graded issue sold in 2024 for the record-smashing price of $2.04 million, making it one of the most expensive comic books ever sold! Combined with the release of the 2025 summer movie blockbuster The Fantastic Four: First Steps, interest in this superhero team is at an all-time high. Now the cover of the scintillating comic book featuring the very first appearance of America's first superhero family has been reproduced in full color on a limited-edition coin. Struck in a Troy ounce of highly pure 99.9% fine silver, it's the latest release in the renowned New Zealand Mint's COMIX series!

The Origin OF The World's Most Offbeat Superhero

Published by Marvel Comics on August 8, 1961, The Fantastic Four #1 was created by the legendary Stan Lee, who said he came up with the idea for the Fantastic Four after his wife urged him to just once try writing a story his own way. Shifting focus from action to character depth, he gave each hero–Mr. Fantastic (Reed Richards), The Invisible Wolman (Sue Storm), The Human Torch (Johnny Storm), and The Thing–their own distinct personality. This departure from formulaic storytelling resonated with readers and marked a turning point in Lee's career. The success of the Fantastic Four paved the way for more complex, relatable characters, ultimately helping shape the Marvel Universe and establishing Lee's legacy as a groundbreaking comic creator. Drawn by legendary artist Jack Kirby, Fantastic Four #1 was a significant moment in comic book history, helping usher in a new level of realism in the medium and introducing the "Marvel Method" of production.

Fantastic Four Leaps Into Action For The First Time

This rectangular-shaped coin shows the members of the Fantastic Four–"TOGETHER FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ONE MIGHTY MAGAZINE"–battling a gigantic underground beast that's surging upward through a city street. The comic, with a cover date of November 1961, tells the origins of the Fantastic Four and features a perilous adventure against the evil Mole Man, the de facto ruler of Subterranea, and the leader of the Moloid race and other mutates, whom he sees as fellow rejected monsters like himself. To further mimic the original comic book, the coin has been colorized on four sides to represent the cover, spine, and pages. Small flashes of silver have been left on the cover to catch the light! This legal-tender $2 coin was also struck in gorgeous Proof condition meaning it was expertly crafted by the mint from hand-selected planchets, polished dies and multiple strikes to produce beautifully frosted details rising over mirror-like fields.
