1923 $1 Silver Certificate 10-pc Set Consecutive Serial Numbers CU
Ten Consecutive Serial Numbers From America’s Last “Horse Blanket” Silver Certificate
On the face of it, these 1923 $1 Silver Certificates look pretty familiar. There’s George Washington exactly as he appears on the bills in your wallet. But that’s not exactly true. On this Silver Certificate—exchangeable at any bank for a hefty U.S. Silver Dollar—Washington stands a little taller. That’s because these notes are from the last large-sized $1 Silver Certificate series issued by the United States.
Paper Currency Backed By Cold, Hard Silver
The 1923 $1 Silver Certificate is the LAST issue printed in the large, 7.375 x 3.125 inches “Horse Blanket” size. Starting in 1928, the size shrunk to the size of $1 bills still used today. These Certificates were backed by silver and could be exchanged for the Morgan or Peace Dollars of the day, hence the name “silver certificate.” Each handsome Note features a portrait of George Washington on the front, with a stark blue seal and serial numbers also printed in blue, with an image of the Great Seal of the U.S., with the words “The United States of America” printed across the top on the back. The reverse also shows a classic engraving known as the “cogwheel.”
