1859-P Indian Head Cent VF
First-Year 1859 Indian Head Cent
One of the most beloved vintage U.S. coins is the Indian Head Cent, which was struck from 1859 to 1909. Finding one of these coins has sent innumerable young people on a quest that led to a lifelong hobby of coin collecting. This particular coin is even more special, as it holds the pedigree of being a first-year issue struck in 1859 at the Philadelphia Mint! Interestingly, this coin is also one of the few dates struck in copper-nickel.
Clean, Uncluttered Classic Design
One of the timeless classics of American coinage, the Indian Head Cent first features Lady Liberty in a feathered headdress on the obverse with a simple laurel wreath around the One Cent denomination on the reverse. Designed by James B. Longacre, the U.S. Mint’s 4th chief engraver, the clean, uncluttered design of this coin simply isn’t possible today’s due to the inscriptions required on modern coinage. It’s an absolute must-have for any American coin collection, and for many of us was the first retired design we collected!
When the Civil War broke out, these coins were being hoarded by civilians and disappearing from circulation, so starting in 1864, the U.S. Mint began striking the coins in bronze instead! You can secure this historic first-year Indian Head Cent in Very Fine (VF) condition.
