1995-D Olympic Cycling Commemorative Silver Dollar BU
Low-Mintage 1995 Olympic Cycling Silver Dollar
The 1995 Olympic Cycling Silver Dollar was one of sixteen coins issued to commemorate the 1996 Summer Olympic Games held in Atlanta, Georgia. The coins were released over the course of two years, from 1995 to 1996, and included clad half dollars, silver dollars, and $5 gold coins. This Cycling Dollar coin struck at the Denver Mint had among the lowest mintages of any of them!
Designs Worthy Of The Olympics
Designed by John Mercanti the U.S. Mint’s 12th Chief Engraver, the obverse features three cyclists in the center, surrounded by inscriptions XXVI OLYMPIAD, LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, 1995, and the Olympic rings with USA above. A giant in the numismatic world, Mercanti worked at the U.S. Mint from 1974 until his retirement in late 2010. He has produced more coin and medal designs than any person in U.S. Mint history. The coin’s reverse was designed by William Krawczewicz and shows two clasped hands beneath the Olympic torch and rings. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, ATLANTA, and ONE DOLLAR. Krawczewicz, a bank note designer for the Bureau of Engraving and Printing in Washington, D.C., worked on the redesigns of the $10, $20, and $50 bills. Besides bank notes, he designed the Maryland quarter, President George W. Bush’s official medal, a World Cup soccer coin, the James Madison Silver Dollar, and three Olympic coins for the 1996 summer games in Atlanta. Of Krawczewicz, it was said that “No one makes more money than Bill Krawczewicz!”
About The 1996 Summer Games In Atlanta
The United States finished with the most gold medals (44) as well as the most silver medals (32) of any country that competed in the 1996 Summer Olympics. Officially hailed as The Games of the XXVI Olympiad, the games were kicked off by the poignant appearance of Mohammed Ali lighting the Olympic Cauldron during the opening ceremonies. The Atlanta Games marked the centennial of the 1896 Summer Olympics in Athens, the inaugural edition of the modern Olympic Games, and were also the first Summer Olympics since 1924 to be held in a different year than the Winter Olympics.
