Commemorating A Century Of Preserving Hallowed Battlegrounds

Since the establishment of Gettysburg National Military Park in 1895, countless numbers of people have worked to preserve the battlefields of the Civil War. Their collective efforts have created places of remembrance, honor, and education for future generations. In 1995, the United States Mint issued the Civil War Battlefields Silver Dollar to commemorative 100 years of preservation. Now, more than a quarter of a century later, we’ve managed to secure a number of these commemoratives and are making them available once again!

Design Features Poignant Memories Of The Civil War

Designed by Don Troiani, an artist known for his depictions of Civil War-era battle scenes, the obverse of this commemorative silver dollar shows a soldier offering a canteen to another wounded soldier. The reverse was designed by John Mercanti, the Mint’s 12 Chief Engraver, and features the Gettysburg landscape and a quote from Joshua Chamberlain, who fought in the battle: “In great deeds something abides. On great fields something stays. Forms change and pass, bodies disappear, but spirits linger to consecrate ground for the visionplace of souls.”
