The First U.S. Coin Struck With Braille Characters

The story of Louis Braille (1809–1852) is a tale of the blind leading the blind—only in this tale, it’s a good thing! Blinded as a young child because of an accident with a stitching awl, Braille enrolled at the National Institute of the Blind in Paris at the age of 10 and within a year he began working on a written communication system for fellow blind individuals. The result was the “Braille” system, an important invention that has changed people’s lives for the better and is still prominent today!

Celebrating The Bicentennial Of Louis Braille’s Birth

In 2009, the U.S. Mint issued this uplifting silver dollar to commemorate the 200th Anniversary of Braille’s birth. It features a portrait of Louis Braille on the obverse while the reverse design shows a child reading a book in Braille. Significantly, the coin also features several dots which spell “Brl,” the contraction of Braille, making this the very first U.S. coin ever struck with Braille characters! Today, Braille has been adapted to almost every known language and is used everywhere from bus stops and maps to music notation and textbooks. In his native France, Braille’s achievement was recognized in 1952 on the 100th anniversary of his death when his body was moved to Paris and interred in the Pantheon.
