This U.S. Army Half Dollar was one of three commemorative coins issued in 2011 to recognize and celebrate the founding of the U.S. Army. The coin designs are emblematic of the traditions, history, and heritage of the Army, and its role in American society throughout history.

The United States Army During Times Of Peace

This one-year-only clad composition half dollar is stunningly designed, with an obverse portraying significant contributions during times of peace, with a U.S. Army soldier surveying, two servicemen building a floodwall and a Redstone Army rocket used during early space exploration. Inscriptions include “U.S. ARMY,” “SERVICE IN PEACE,” “IN GOD WE TRUST,” “LIBERTY,” and the date “2011.” The reverse symbolizes the U.S. Army as the first military service to defend the country, and its key role in the Nation’s internal development. It features a Continental solider armed with a musket along with 13 stars appear above to represent the original states. Inscriptions include “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “FIRST IN SERVICE TO THE NATION,” “E PLURIBUS UNUM,” and the denomination “HALF DOLLAR.”

While U.S. Mint was authorized to strike a combination of 750,000 Proof and Uncirculated clad half-dollars, only a miniscule mintage of 68,332 Proof coins were ever produced by the San Francisco Mint. Surcharges from the sale of these coins were donated to the Army Historical Foundation to support the construction of the National Museum of the United States Army at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
