2015-S U.S. Marshall Commemorative Half-Dollar Proof
Honoring 225 Years Of U.S. Lawmen
Long before Marshal Matt Dillon patrolled the dusty streets of Dodge City, President George Washington established the U.S. Marshal Agency in 1789, making it the nation’s oldest federal law enforcement agency. Now you can honor the long and storied history of the Agency’s legendary lawmen with this copper-nickel Commemorative Half Dollar!
Designs Ripe With Symbolism
Released in 2015, the coin’s bold, detailed obverse design features the image of a U.S. Marshal and a horse contrasted with a modern female Marshal wearing tactical gear along with the dates 1789–2014. The reverse depicts Lady Justice holding a scale in her left hand and the U.S. Marshals Service Star in her right. Augmenting the design is a host of historic symbols, including the U.S. Constitution, an 18th century whiskey jug that symbolizes the 1794 Whiskey Rebellion, old wooden railroad tracks representing the Pullman Strike of 1894, a stack of schoolbooks strapped together with an apple resting on top symbolizing the 1960 New Orleans school integration, and a pair of open handcuffs that represent the task of the U.S. Marshals to apprehend federal fugitives.
Exquisite Proof Coins From The San Francisco Mint
This coin was struck at the San Francisco Mint with an exquisite proof finish, meaning it was expertly crafted from hand-selected planchets, polished dies and multiple strikes to produce beautifully frosted details rising over mirror-like backgrounds. Surcharges received from the sale of these coins were paid to the U.S. Marshals Museum, Inc., for the preservation, maintenance, and display of artifacts and documents. Funds were also divided between the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association Foundation, and the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
Today, the duties of the U.S. Marshals Service include protecting the federal judiciary, apprehending federal fugitives, managing & selling seized assets acquired by criminals through illegal activities, housing and transporting federal prisoners, and operating the Witness Security Program. Unlike the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), which is under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Marshal Agency is the enforcement arm of the federal courts.
