This coin was struck at the San Francisco Mint with an exquisite proof finish, meaning it was expertly crafted from hand-selected planchets, polished dies and multiple strikes to produce beautifully frosted details rising over mirror-like backgrounds. Surcharges received from the sale of these coins were paid to the U.S. Marshals Museum, Inc., for the preservation, maintenance, and display of artifacts and documents. Funds were also divided between the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the Federal Law Enforcement Officers Association Foundation, and the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.

Today, the duties of the U.S. Marshals Service include protecting the federal judiciary, apprehending federal fugitives, managing & selling seized assets acquired by criminals through illegal activities, housing and transporting federal prisoners, and operating the Witness Security Program.
