Connecticut is the U.S. Mint’s First American Innovation™ Release for 2020

Launched in 2018, the United States Mint’s American Innovation $1 Coin Program celebrates the American spirit of innovation and has captured the fancy of coin collectors everywhere! Here’s your chance to get the first American Innovation Dollar of 2020, the Connecticut Dollar.

The coin features the Gerber Variable Scale, showing it as if it has just that been used to increase a geometric shape by 200%. It’s no coincidence that the shape resembles the State of Connecticut! Inscriptions are “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA,” “GERBER VARIABLE SCALE,” and “CONNECTICUT.” The Connecticut coin pays tribute to the work of Heinz Joseph Gerber, who invented the device while studying aeronautical engineering at the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute’s Hartford campus in 1945. Gerber had escaped Nazi-controlled Austria during World War II, and his graphing calculator gave scientists a clear, quick, and simple solution to solving problems of scale. So useful was Gerber’s device that by the 1950s it was a universally accepted tool for engineers and architects all over the world.

The coin’s obverse features a common design that will be used throughout the series. It depicts the Statue of Liberty along with a small privy mark of a stylized gear, representing industry and innovation. In addition, like the other coins issued in 2020, the Connecticut Dollar features the incused edge inscriptions: “2020,” “S” mint mark, and “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
