1861 $5 Confederate Paper Currency Note F–VF
Confederate $5 Paper Currency Notes
As you might imagine, federal funds were cut off to Southern States when they seceded from the United States and formed the Confederate States of America. And so, to keep its economy going, the Confederacy printed these $5 Confederate Notes. Here we have a note for your collection that was printed in 1861 the year the Civil War broke out.
King Cotton Reigns On This Note
This visually striking note features a vignette of the Goddess Ceres sitting on a bail of cotton. It’s a significant image as Ceres was the goddess of agriculture and cotton was the South’s most important crop, providing revenue for its government, arms for its military, and the economic power to back up its diplomatic strategy abroad.
Graded In Fine To Very Fine Condition
More than 150 years old, it’s remarkable that any of these historic pieces of Civil War history have survived. Most were destroyed following the Southern defeat in the Civil War because they were deemed worthless with no government to back them with hard assets. But the notes available here all come in moderately circulated Fine to Very Fine (F–VF) condition. Now you can travel back in time to an era when brother fought against brother for the very fate of the nation itself. Add this 1861 $5 Confederate Note to your collection today!
