In February of 1945, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill and Soviet Union General Secretary Josef Stalin met in Yalta, a small Russian resort town on the southern coast of the Crimean Peninsula surrounded by the Black Sea. The purpose for the meeting was to discuss the future of Germany and Europe. It was there that “The Big Three” agreed on occupation zones for post-war Europe that would be controlled by American, British, French and Soviet military forces. They also agreed that the city of Berlin would be divided into similar occupation zones.
