The United States Navy: A Global Force For Good

The United States Navy may not rank as having the world’s largest fleet of ships anymore—it lost that title to China in 2020—but it still ranks as the world’s most powerful and combat-ready fleet because China relies disproportionately on smaller classes of ships. In addition, the U.S. holds a massive advantage in aircraft carriers. Today, the U.S. Navy is arguably the most important day-to-day component of America’s military on the international stage and ably fulfills its mission to maintain, train, and equip combat-ready naval forces capable of winning wars, deterring aggression, and maintaining freedom of the seas. To pay tribute to this branch of America’s Armed Forces, the U.S. Mint has released this magnificent commemorative medal as part of its Armed Forces Bronze Medals Program that’s loaded with enough detail to satisfy any military history buff.

Navy Medal Buoyed By Exciting Designs

This action-packed medal depicts the modern U.S. Navy destroyer John Paul Jones slicing through the water while the legendary USS Constitution sails behind it. Nicknamed “Old Ironsides,” the Constitution was one of six original frigates authorized for construction by the Naval Act of 1794. Launched in 1797, she’s the world’s oldest ship still afloat. Soaring above the two ships in the background is a formation of F-18 Hornets. Employed as both a fighter and attack aircraft, the F-18 Hornet is an all-weather supersonic, twin-engine, carrier-capable, multirole combat aircraft used by the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps. Inscriptions are “UNITED STATES NAVY” AND “DON’T GIVE UP THE SHIP,” the latter spoken by mortally wounded Commander James Lawrence to his crew on the USS Chesapeake during the War of 1812. The reverse design features a line of sharp-looking sailors dressed in crisp white uniforms standing at attention in a “Manning the Rail” ceremony while the American flag flies in the background. Inscribed around the border of the design are the Navy’s core values: “HONOR,” “COURAGE,” and “COMMITMENT.”
