A Silver Russian Kopeck From Ivan The Terrible!

These Russian Kopecks were struck in Russia more than 400 years ago during the reign of Ivan IV Vasilyevich, the Grand Prince of Moscow and Sovereign of all Russia from 1533, and the first Tsar of all Russia from 1547 until his death in 1584. Better known as Ivan the Terrible, Ivan was a ruthless despot whose nickname suggests a bloodthirsty reputation—a reputation that was well-earned considering that despite being described as intelligent and devout, he also was prone to fits paranoia, rage, and episodic outbreaks of mental instability that increased with age. In one fit of anger, he beat his pregnant daughter-in-law hard enough to cause a miscarriage, all because he didn’t like the way she was dressed. When confronted by his son and eldest heir about the incident, Ivan became so enraged that he beat him death!

The Cause Of Ivan’s Terrible Personality

Largely remembered for his brutal reign and inhuman tactics for maintaining control of Russia through fear, Ivan has since gone down in history as one of the most controversial figures in the history of Russia. Most historians believe Ivan had eight wives, but he really loved only his first wife, Anastasia Romanova, who he believed was poisoned by traitorous boyars (Russian nobles) who were trying to kill him. In revenge, Ivan ordered the torture and executions of the suspected culprits. Forever haunted by his first wife’s death, Ivan destroyed thousands of boyars and their families during his reign. Of his other seven wives, divorce was clearly not a word in Ivan’s vocabulary. Some were sent to convents, others disappeared, and the others were simply murdered.

A Great Leader With A Great Many Flaws

A great leader who laid the foundations for the later Russian Empire, some of Ivan’s major accomplishments include, tax reform, a new law code, centralization and unification of the state administration, obligating landowners to serve in the military, a standing army equipped with firearms, expansion of the country’s borders, and setting up the first printing press in Russia. Burt despite his role in making Russia an immensely powerful country, his tactics also led to his nation’s downfall as his thirst for war upon war led to the exhaustion and devastation of the country and people. In a fitting end to the reign of Ivan the Terrible, he died when he was just 53 years old after suffering a rage-fueled stroke while playing a “friendly” game of chess. Seeing as how he had already killed his oldest so and heir, the crown was passed to Ivan’s mentally disabled son Feodor, who was incapable of doing anything to stop the decline of his father’s empire as Russia sank into a period of turbulence.
