The Inauspicious Birth Of The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles barely got off the ground. They were created by the comic book artists Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, who used money from a tax refund and a loan from Eastman’s uncle to publish their own comic book. Hamstrung by a limited budget and resources, the final product resulting in a rough and gritty aesthetic that was far different from the blazing color and humorous nature of the early animated cartoons. When everything was all said and done, just 3,000 copies of the first issue were published with a cover price of $1.50. Today, that issue is valued at around $22,000.

Based on Eastman and Laird’s knowledge of ninja lore and martial arts movies, the origin of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was a surprise success. In 1987, the characters were licensed to Playmates Toys, which developed a line of Turtles action figures and were promoted with an animated series that ran for almost a decade. Further animated series followed in 2003, 2012, and 2018 along with numerous video games. The Turtles have also starred in several feature films, the most recent of which was 2023’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem.
