2008 Mint State-70 American Eagle Silver Dollar

America's finest silver is displayed in all its glory with the 2008 American Eagle Silver Dollar. Every year, savvy buyers stash these away. Each is struck in one ounce of 99.9% fine silver and graded in flawless Mint State-70 (MS70) condition. Grading service varies.

Since 1986, the American Silver Eagle produced by the United States Mint has been the official silver bullion coin of the United States. Despite silver values constantly changing, the demand for U.S. Silver Eagle coins has grown steadily over the decades and today is at an all-time high. Add one or a few to your collection today!

About the 2008 American Silver Eagle:

Global economic uncertainty in 2008 created a sharp demand for precious metals, and the U.S. Mint responded by producing American Silver Eagle coins in numbers that shattered previous records. Despite the increase in production, demand still exceeded supply, and the U.S. Mint was forced to suspend sales of Silver Eagles temporarily as a rationing program was planned and put into place.

As in previous years, the U.S. Mint produced an uncirculated version, the 2008-W Silver Eagle. But production of the uncirculated coin and 2008 Proof Silver Eagle were halted during the year due to a shortage of silver blanks. By law, the U.S. Mint must produce Silver Eagle bullion coins, but there is no similar mandate for Silver Eagle Proofs. Because demand was so strong for 2008 Silver American Eagles, the U.S. Mint was compelled in mid-year to quit producing Silver Eagle collectible coins, so that all silver blanks could be used for 2008 Silver Eagle bullion coins.

2008-W Silver Eagle Reverse of 2007

Perhaps the most interesting development of 2008 was the introduction of the first substantial variety of Silver Eagle. Before the production of collectible coins was suspended, the U.S. Mint created the 2008-W Silver Eagle Reverse Proof of 2007, a version made by using the reverse dies for the 2007 Silver Eagle. Collectors snapped up the novel variety and prices rose quickly as demand grew. The overall average price of silver during 2008 was $14.99 per ounce.
