The Philippines Cent Struck in America

In 1935, the United States Congress granted Commonwealth Status to the Philippines and promised independence in 1946. Those plans were put on hold on December 7, 1941 when Japan invaded the island nation just 10 hours after its attack on Pearl Harbor. Three months later, American General Douglas MacArthur was ordered to leave the islands lest he fall into Japanese hands. Before leaving, however, he boldly announced that he would return — and so he did, on October 20, 1944. Returning with him were special bronze coins struck for the nation in 1944 by the San Francisco Mint.

The coins were produced to help rebuild the shattered Filipino economy. Following the Japanese invasion and occupation of the Philippines, nearly all coins disappeared from circulation as the Japanese confiscated all the coins they could get their hands on and melted them down. In preparation for General MacArthur's return to the Philippines, the San Francisco Mint struck millions of Bronze One Centavo coins.

These Bronze Centavo coins depict a young Filipino man seated next to an anvil holding a hammer in his right hand, his left arm raised. In the background is a billowing volcano. The inscriptions “One Centavo” and “Filipinas” complete the design. The coin’s reverse features an eagle perched atop the Filipino shield with the worlds “United States of America.”
