1916 Portugal 50 Centavos Silver NGC MS63
1916 Silver Half Dollars that Escaped German Capture!
When Germany declared war on Portugal in 1916, fear swept across the tiny country. Would the Germans invade? No one knew for certain, but there was reason to be concerned. After all, in the early days of World War I, Germany put in motion its now-famous Schlieffen Plan, a strategy that called for Germany to knock France out of the war first before turning its attention towards Russia. To make the plan work, Germany invaded Belgium, a neutral country, and almost succeeded in capturing Paris. If the Kaiser’s army was audacious enough to invade a neutral country, many Portuguese citizens wondered what would happen to them!
As fear and trepidation grew in Portugal, one cautious man decided to take matters into his own hands and fled the country. He didn’t leave empty-handed, however. He also took with him a hoard of fresh, new 1916 50 Centavos Silver Half Dollars. Struck in 83.5% fine silver, these coins were the last Silver 50 Centavos ever struck by Portugal.
Years later, the coins appeared at a coin show in Tokyo that one of our representatives was attending. Upon seeing the fabulous hoard of coins, he snapped up every one he could get his hands on. And what a hoard! The coins were still intact in their original rolls and in absolutely pristine condition, just as they left the mint. In fact, the coins available in this offer have all been certified, graded and encapsulated by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) as being in Choice Brilliant Uncirculated Mint State-63 (MS63) condition with stunning mint luster and beautiful eye appeal.
