On April 5, 1933, amid the Great Depression, President Franklin Roosevelt issued Executive Order 6102- the infamous Gold Recall. By May 10, 1933, the government had collected over $300 million in gold coins, and the vast majority were melted into bars for Fort Knox.

Of those nearly 300 million Liberty gold coins minted over seven decades, countless millions vanished forever into the melting pots. Official estimates suggest that fewer than 5% of pre-1933 U.S. gold coins remain today.
