Hard-To-Find Prussian 200th Anniversary Coin

Here’s 200 years of European history — all on one coin! It starts all the way back in 1701 when Frederick I separated his lands from the Holy Roman Empire and declared Prussia a Kingdom. Two centuries later, Prussian King Wilhelm II was not only the King of Prussia, but he was also the emperor of the German Empire that had been formed in 1871 following the unification of Prussian-dominated Germanic states during the Franco-Prussian War.

Silver Coin Pays Tribute To Prussian History

To celebrate Prussia’s bicentennial in 1901, Wilhelm had this Large Prussian 2 Mark Silver Coin struck. This one-year-only issue commemorates that history, showing Frederick and Wilhelm side by side on the obverse. Wilhelm, ever the bombastic militaristic showboat, is shown wearing a spiked “Pickelhaube” helmet that is sometimes referred to as a “Pimple Hood” helmet. The Imperial German Eagle is boldly displayed on the reverse. Of course, Wilhelm fell victim to his own hubris just a few short years later when he was forced to abdicate his throne during World War I, bringing an end to the House of Hohenzollern’s centuries-long reign.

Turn Of The Century Coins From Imperial Germany

We recently uncovered a very small quantity of these coins in Germany. Each was struck more than 120 years ago in 11.111 grams of highly pure 90% fine silver by the Kingdom of Prussia, the largest and most influential kingdom within the German Empire. They also come in Very Fine to Extremely Fine (VF–XF) condition. Don’t wait on this. Act now!
