For years, the South African Mint has collected accolades and fans thanks to their beautiful Natura series, featuring some of Africa’s unique wildlife.
That wildlife includes five particular animals—the Elephant, the Lion, the Black Rhino, the Leopard and the Buffalo—which are collectively referred to as the “Big 5.” Originally used by trophy hunters who sought to add one of each animal to their collections, the “Big 5” is now a goal of safari photographers who hope to see each creature in their natural habitat for themselves.
The South African Mint is proud to release a new series of coins dedicated to the Big 5, each displaying a unique, intimate, close-up portrait of one of these majestic animals. The Black Rhino is the third release of this new series.
Innovative Design
Struck in gold, platinum or silver, this stunning coin’s obverse depicts a full-bodied image of a rhino facing you down. His head is turned ever so slightly to the side, giving you an idea of just how dangerous that giant horn really is. The reverse is where this coin truly shines—a unique bisected image of the Rhino’s profile, allowing you to examine its features in exquisite detail.
Minted in Gold, Platinum or Silver
The 2020 Big 5 Black Rhino is available struck in one full Troy ounce of 99.99% gold, 99.95% platinum or 99.9% silver. Gold coins carry a legal tender value of 50 Rand, Platinum 20 Rand, and the silver coins carry a value of 5 Rand.
Certified Flawless by NGC with Special Designations
Each coin has been individually certified and graded by Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) to be in flawless Proof 70 Ultra Cameo condition. In addition, NGC has certified each coin as First Day of Issue (FDI), a special designation reserved only for those freshly struck coins that were secured from the mint on the very first day of the mintage's release.
