Unique Bi-Tetradrachm of Antoninus Pius – A Favorite of Giovanni Datarri
For collectors of ancient coins, few names carry as much weight as Giovanni Datarri’s. His collection of coins of Alexandria is legendary. And when he got his hands on this unique Bi-Tetradrachm of Roman Emperor Antoninus Pius, he described the coin as “fior di conio” – a “flower of a coin.”
One of history’s so-called “Five Good Emperors” of the Roman Empire, Antoninus Pius (86-161) reigned from 138 until his death in 161. He was known as mild-manned and capable, and his reign is notable for its lack of revolts or military incursions. A skilled administrator and builder, Antoninus never left Italy during his reign and upon his death he left the empire with a large surplus in the treasury.
Struck in A.D. 157 or 158 in Alexandria, Egypt, this coin’s 26 mm diameter is so much larger than a regular Roman coin that it’s considered to be a medallion – a gift given by an Emperor for special events or to bestow honor upon the recipient. It’s one of the few Roman coins that displays a date, and comes graded by the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) to be in Choice About Uncirculated (AU) condition with a special Star designation and a Strike 5/5 and Surface 4/5.
