Scarce South African 6-Pence From 1959

This is a key date coin in the South African 6-Pence series. Whereas in other years the mint produced at least a million (if not 2 or 3 million) coins, 1959 saw an exceptionally small mintage of just 261,823—less than a quarter of the next smallest mintage in the series!

The First Definitive UK Coin Portrait Of Queen Elizabeth II

Struck in 2.83 grams of 50% fine silver, the coin features British sculptor Mary Gillick's design of a youthful Queen Elizabeth II. Gillick's design was the First Definitive UK Coin Portrait and debuted in 1953, one year after the Queen ascended to the throne. It's famous for expertly capturing the undeniable grace, youth, and beauty of the then 26-year-old new queen and is especially poignant now following the passing of the beloved monarch in 2022. The coin's reverse is the work of British artist G.T. Kruger-Gray and depicts a protea, a flower native to South Africa.

South Africa used the British coin system—with its effigy of the reigning monarch—until 1961 when it gained independence and became a republic. This was the beginning of the South African rand, which takes its name from the Witwatersrand where gold was discovered.
