South Africa Celebrates 200th Anniversary Of Paul Kruger's Birth

A burly man with a weathered face, deep-set eyes, and a long white beard, former South African President Paul Kruger (1825–1904) embodied Afrikaner nationalism. His stern presence and leadership during the Boer Wars symbolized South Africa's resistance to British rule, making him a lasting icon of sovereignty and traditional Boer values. It's no wonder that when the prestigious South African Mint struck the first modern gold bullion coins in 1967 that the portrait of Paul Kruger appeared on the obverse. Fittingly, the coin was christened the "Krugerrand," a name derived from the combination of "Kruger" and "Rand," the South African monetary unit. Special Privy Mark Pays Tribute To Paul Kruger

The privy mark shows a small portrait of Paul Kruger, the same image, in fact, of the large portrait on the coin only many times smaller, along with the date of his birth with the "18" and the "25" on either side of the miniature portrait. The coin's reverse features the iconic image of the Springbok antelope that has appeared on the coin every year of its release. Struck in 1/50th of an ounce of highly pure 91.67% fine gold, this button-sized coin measures 8 mm in diameter. The coin also comes in gorgeous Proof condition, meaning it was expertly crafted by the mint from hand-selected planchets, polished dies, and multiple strikes to produce beautifully frosted details rising over mirror-like fields.
