Paying Tribute To Potawatomi Culture And History

The Native American Mint’s coin sets honoring different tribes continues with the 2024 Potawatomi Tribe Set. The Potawatomi were semisedentary people who controlled almost 30 million acres in the Great Lakes region across Canada, Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, and Wisconsin. They lived in agricultural communities in the spring and summer and split up into smaller family units during the fall and winter. The Potawatomi were also the most treatied Indian tribe in United States history as pressure from Westward Expansion resulted in many relocations and forced removals—the most famous of which was the Potawatomi Trail of Death in 1838 that forcibly moved nearly 1,000 tribal members from northern Indiana to eastern Kansas. Despite the upheaval and cultural chaos caused by these relocations, the Potawatomi have managed to preserve their rich legacy.

Legal-Tender Native American Coins

Long before America was a nation of states, it was a nation of tribes. To honor these tribes, the Torrance, California-based Native American Mint struck a series of Indian Sovereign Nations coins that are authorized by each tribe. The coins are also recognized by the Federal Government as legal tender in each tribal nation as set forth in the Constitution of the United States and from the terms of bilateral treaties that date back to the 18th century.

One-Year-Only Designs Honor Potawatomi Culture

The Potawatomi Tribe Six-Piece Set features six different obverse designs depicting images important to Potawatomi culture, tradition, and history. The designs include a hand mirror whose back features a turtle carved into the wood, a carved wooden doll, a young warrior holding a broken spear to symbolize peace with European settlers, a traditional rain dance, and an image from the 1832 Black Hawk war when then-captain Abraham Lincoln spared the life of a Potawatomi tribal member. The final design shows a portrait of Chief Shabbona (1775–1859), an accomplished warrior who fought against the United States along with Tecumseh during the War of 1812, but later worked for peaceful relations between the Potawatomi and European settlers when he realized that fighting was in vain. The word, Potawatomi means, “Keepers of the Fire.” It refers to the fact that they were part of the Council of Three Fires with the Ojibwe (Keepers of the Faith) and Ottawa (Keepers of Trade) Tribes.
