The final design shows a portrait of Chief Shabbona (1775–1859), an accomplished warrior who fought against the United States along with Tecumseh during the War of 1812, but later worked for peaceful relations between the Potawatomi and European settlers when he realized that fighting was in vain. The word, Potawatomi means, “Keepers of the Fire.” It refers to the fact that they were part of the Council of Three Fires with the Ojibwe (Keepers of the Faith) and Ottawa (Keepers of Trade) Tribes.
