Japan’s 2020 Cherry Blossom Proof Set Is Ready to Bloom in Your Collection

It was sad news when Japan announced that its annual Cherry Blossom Viewing Festivals would be canceled. However, there was one small consolation: the annual seven-piece Cherry Blossom Viewing Proof Coin Sets were still being issued! Each set contains Proof versions of all six circulating denominations, along with a one-year-only colorized silver medal.

Cherry Blossoms in Japanese Culture

The significance for Japan’s reverent devotion to cherry blossoms goes back several centuries. For the Japanese people, cherry blossoms represent the fragility of life — a poignant reminder that life, while very beautiful, is also tragically short. These sets contain the six circulating Japanese coins ranging in denomination from 1-Yen aluminum coin all the way up to the 500 Yen nickel-brass coin. Plus, each set also contains a colorized medal struck in 92.5% Sterling silver. This beautiful medal measures 35 mm in diameter and features the Kasugai, 2020’s Blossom of the Year. The medal’s reverse features a laser-frosted satin finish that features an intricate design of insects with flowers and leaves depicted in relief. Each set will come sealed in a leather display case that folds out to form a triangular display.

Not only are these sets incredibly attractive, but they’re darn near impossible to find. Though 18,000 sets were authorized, no more than 300 sets will be made available overseas.
