Queen Victoria, Grandmother Of Europe!

In the last decades of her life and reign, Great Britain’s Queen Victoria was called the “Grandmother of Europe,” a nickname with literal justification as her many children married into some of Europe’s royal families, and her numerous grandchildren, once grown, did the same. That’s what this eight-piece collection, spanning across two centuries with deep ties to Queen Victoria’s offspring, is all about. This set includes:

  • 1893–1901 GREAT BRITAIN QUEEN VICTORIA SOVEREIGN. Victoria’s reign from 1837 to1901 was longer than that of any previous British monarch—until her great-great-granddaughter Queen Elizabeth II broke her record. That period of British industrial, political, scientific, and military change and prosperity has become known as the Victorian era.
  • 1902–1910 GREAT BRITAIN KING EDWARD VII SOVEREIGN. The eldest son of Victoria; Edward VII was known as “The Uncle of Europe.” Nearly 60 years old by the time he became king, Edward was never able to live up to his mother’s standards and spent much of his life as a playboy member of London’s high society crowd.
  • 1897–1911 RUSSIA CZAR NICHOLAS II RUSSIA 5 RUBLES. Nicholas II was related to Queen Victoria through his marriage to his wife Alexandra, the granddaughter of Queen Victoria. They and their children were murdered in 1918 by Bolsheviks during the Russian Revolution.
  • 1888 GERMANY KING FRIEDRICH III 20 MARK. Nicknamed “Fritz” by family and friends, Friedrich became Victoria’s son-in-law when he married her oldest child, Victoria, Princess Royal. Unlike most of her peers, Princess Victoria was intelligent, well read, and artistically inclined, making her an ideal Queen Consort for Friedrich.
  • 1865 BELGIUM KING LEOPOLD I 20 FRANCS. King Leopold was the uncle of both Queen Victoria and her husband Prince Albert. His first marriage in 1816 was to Princess Charlotte, Victoria’s cousin. In 1830 he accepted the invitation from the newly independent Belgians to be their king.
  • 1896–1899 SPAIN KING ALFONSO XIII 20 PESETAS. Alfonso was married to Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg, the youngest granddaughter of Queen Victoria. He reigned as King of Spain until 1931 when he fled the country following the 1931 municipal elections and the establishment of the Second Spanish Republic.
  • 1861–1878 ITALY KING VICTOR EMANUEL II 20 LIRE. King Victor Emmanuel III and Queen Victoria share a pair of common ancestors and Emmanuel III’s daughter, Princess Mafalda, married Philipp, Prince and Landgrave of Hesse, one of Victoria’s great grandsons.
  • 1873 – 1900 DENMARK KING CHRISTIAN IX 10 KRONER. Christian was King of Denmark from 1863 until his death in 1906. He was a third cousin of Queen Victoria through their mutual descent from King George II of Great Britain.

What makes this set more difficult to assemble is that each coin was struck in 90% to 91.7% fine gold, and each is in Very Fine (VF) condition. Don’t wait to secure this spectacular set, or you will wind up empty-handed!
