Britannia Through The Ages 9-pc Circulated Set
Nine Faces Of Britannia
Britannia—the warrior queen who embodies the spirit of Great Britain—has been a fixture on coins for centuries. Usually depicted as a helmeted female warrior holding a trident and shield, she first appeared as the personification of the British Isles on a coin struck in Rome in the years before the Roman Emperor Hadrian visited Britain in A.D. 122. Britannia was based on a real-life person, Queen Boudica, one of the most iconic queens of Britain. The wife of King Prasutagus of the Iceni, a Celtic tribe that was a major power in Britain during ancient times, Boudica assumed the mantle of leadership after her husband died and nearly drove the Romans out of the country.
The Quintessential Symbol Of A Nation
The Britannia design was revived during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I (1558–1603) which began England’s association with the sea as a way of bolstering British claims to be masters of the oceans. Since then, Britannia has become the quintessential symbol of a nation, appearing on copper coins issued during the reign of Charles II, and on the penny for centuries along with other coins including the fourpence issued during the reign of William IV, and the Edwardian Florin. Today, the Britannia is the British flagship coin.
