1881-O Morgan Silver Dollars From The GSA Hoard!

The Government Services Administration (GSA) hoard was a hidden stash of vintage coins kept by the U.S. government for decades. Eventually, the hoard’s Morgan Silver Dollars were released via the GSA between October 1972 and July of 1980. This sale is among the most significant silver dollar hoards of all time, and we’ve secured Morgans from that hoard still in their GSA Soft Packs, complete with the GSA tokens. Here you can obtain a Morgan Silver Dollar struck in 1881 at the New Orleans Mint.

The Release Of The GSA Hoard

After an audit in 1964 revealed that the United States Treasury held millions of silver dollars, a comprehensive accounting of the inventory was held, and preparations began for their disposition. In a series of sales between 1973 and 1980, the GSA offered these coins at public auction. Many collectors are aware of the large black GSA holders that most of the coins were encapsulated in. Today, collectors believe these holders were the inspiration for today’s “slab.” But fewer people are aware of the GSA “Soft Packs,” that a smaller subset of the hoard was stored in.

The GSA Hoard’s Scarce Circulated Coins

Unlike the coins that were judged as being in Uncirculated condition, the Morgans that were deemed to be in Circulated condition were packaged in soft plastic sleeves with a white plastic GSA token. A certificate, bidding information card, and the sealed dollar were then placed inside a blue envelope marked, “United States Silver Dollar.” It’s estimated that fewer than 100,000 of these GSA soft packs were sold, although an official number has never been revealed by the GSA. We have only a limited number of these 1881-O Morgan Silver Dollar GSA Soft Packs available so act fast and secure yours now!

COIN HIGHLIGHTS:

  • ·     GSA “SOFT PACK” MORGANS – This Morgan Silver Dollar comes from the famous Government Services Administration (GSA) hoard and is still housed in its GSA soft pack complete with its GSA token.
  • ·     AMERICA’S MOST POPULAR COIN – The Morgan Silver Dollar—so named for its designer, U.S. Mint Assistant Engraver George T. Morgan—has stood the test of time. Struck from 1878 to 1904 and again in 1921, it was the coin of America’s “Wild West” and jingled in the coin purses of gamblers, gunfighters, soldiers, and dance hall girls.
  • ·     CLASSIC DESIGNS – Morgan’s historic design depicts a profile of Lady Liberty on the obverse while the reverse features an eagle with outstretched wings. The model used for Liberty was Miss Anna Williams of Philadelphia, who Morgan declared to have the most perfect feminine profile he had ever seen.
  • ·     STRUCK IN GLEAMING AMERICAN SILVER – Morgan Silver Dollars were struck in 90% silver from the famous Comstock Lode and measure 38.1 mm in diameter.
  • ·     LEGAL TENDER SILVER DOLLAR – Morgans were $1 legal tender and struck during the heyday of America’s Wild West era where coins were overwhelmingly preferred over paper currency.
  • ·      CIRCULATED CONDITION – Your 1881-O Morgan Silver Dollar coin will come in Circulated condition. It’s estimated that fewer than 100,000 of these GSA Soft Packs in all dates were sold, although an official number has never been revealed by the GSA. Only Circulated coins were housed in the Soft Packs.
  • ·     THE CASE OF THE DISAPPEARING MORGANS – While millions of Morgan Silver Dollars were struck from 1878 through 1921, massive silver meltings and the ravages of time have taken their toll. Today coin experts believe that only 15% of all Morgans ever struck remain in existence—and fewer still remain in Mint State-65 Uncirculated condition!
