A Top 100 Morgan Silver Dollar Error Variety
In the 1880s, Nevada's Comstock Lode was in full production, with loads of silver making its way East for striking at the New Orleans Mint. Among the coins struck were these Morgan Silver Dollars, minted in highly pure 90% fine silver. The Morgan circulated heavily around the United States, and eventually as much as 85% of all Morgans struck wound up being worn down or melted for their silver, meaning only a fraction of the original mintage has survived for today's collectors.
Unique Top 100 VAM Variety
Amid those survivors, some very interesting "error" coins have also been discovered. Take this beauty for example. Hailed as a Top 100 Variety, it's known as a VAM-3. What is a VAM? The term "VAM" refers to the initials created by Leroy C. Van and A. George Mallis, who co-authored The Comprehensive Catalog and Encyclopedia of Morgan and Peace Dollars which lists every die variety of each coin currently identified. Each VAM has been assigned a number used to identify its listing in Van Allen and Mallis' work. The VAM variety available in this offer is an 1887/6 VAM-3 where the lower curve of a 6 protrudes from the bottom right of the 7 in the date. The variety was created when 1886 dies had the last digit of the date removed and replaced with a 7. However, the mint worker did not completely remove the 6, leaving a trace of the bottom loop. The strength of the overdate is such that this variety has earned a place among the coins listed in the guidebook, adding to its universal desirability among Morgan Dollar collectors.

The model used for Liberty was Miss Anna Williams of New Orleans, who Morgan declared to have the most perfect feminine profile he had ever seen.
