In the 1880s, Nevada's Comstock Lode was in full production, with loads of silver making its way East for striking at the New Orleans Mint. Among the coins struck were these Morgan Silver Dollars, minted in highly pure 90% fine silver. The Morgan circulated heavily around the United States, and eventually as much as 85% of all Morgans struck wound up being worn down or melted for their silver, meaning only a fraction of the original mintage has survived for today's collectors.

Each VAM has been assigned a number used to identify its listing in Van Allen and Mallis' work. The VAM variety available in this offer is an 1887/6 VAM-3 where the lower curve of a 6 protrudes from the bottom right of the 7 in the date. The variety was created when 1886 dies had the last digit of the date removed and replaced with a 7. However, the mint worker did not completely remove the 6, leaving a trace of the bottom loop. The strength of the overdate is such that this variety has earned a place among the coins listed in the guidebook, adding to its universal desirability among Morgan Dollar collectors.
