1890-CC Morgan Silver Dollar NGC MS63+ Proof-Like
Gorgeous, High-Grade Proof-Like Carson City Morgan Silver Dollar
Maybe Morgan Silver Dollars are among the most sought-vintage American coins by collectors because of their reputation as the “hard currency” of the Old West. Or maybe it’s because of the alluring design, with a portrait of Miss Liberty on the obverse and a bold spread-winged eagle on the reverse. Whatever the reason, their immense popularity, combined with the fact that millions of them were melted down in 1918 and 1942 to help the U.S. war efforts, has made them harder and harder to find. That goes double for this one from the Carson City Mint with the coveted “CC” mint mark and a low mintage of just 2.3 million.
Scarce Wild West Dollars From The Carson City Mint
Back in 1890, the Philadelphia Mint struck nearly 17 million Morgan Silver Dollars. More than 2,600 miles away, the Carson City Mint struck a shade over 2 million. But that’s only part of the remarkable story of why the 1890 Carson City Morgan is so hard to find. You see, folks out East preferred paper dollars, so the coins from the Mother Mint in Philadelphia are much easier to find today in nice condition, as they tended to sit in bank vaults instead of in people’s pockets. But in the West, folks preferred money in the form of these hefty, highly pure 90% fine silver coins. The result was “hard currency” from the Carson City Mint exchanging hands frequently in commerce. That’s why this coin in Choice Uncirculated Mint State-63+ (MS63+) condition is a real find!
Silver Dollars From The Famous Comstock Lode
Morgan Silver Dollars were struck thanks to the discovery of the Comstock Lode Near Virginia City, Nevada—the richest silver mine in American history. So, it’s no surprise that a mint sprung up in nearby Carson City, Nevada to help handle the load. Surprisingly, the Carson City Mint struck the Morgan for only 13 years, with its total mintage for all years combined making up just 2% of the total mintage of all Morgan Silver Dollars struck between 1878 and 1921. Now, after years of being worn in commerce, scratched in saddle bags, and melted down for their precious metal, many Morgan Silver Dollars are shadows of their former selves. But that’s not the case with THIS coin!
A High-Grade Morgan That’s Even Better Than The Smithsonian’s Specimen!
Not only was this coin graded in Choice Uncirculated Mint State-63 condition, but it was also awarded a + plus designation by NGC because it is a hair away from being graded MS64, making its grade Mint State-63+ (MS63+). It also carries a Proof-like designation (PL) awarded when there is a clear reflection in the fields on both sides of the coin as viewed from two to four inches away. Proof-Like coins are usually among the first few hundred struck from a brand-new die or a polished die, giving the coin a brilliant, mirrored look that is very eye-appealing. According to the NGC population report, there are just TWO 1890-CC Morgan Silver Dollars with this grade. What’s more, the specimen in the world-renowned Smithsonian is a grade lower at MS62!
