1909-O Barber Quarter NGC G6
The LAST 1909-O Barber Quarter
You might have a Washington Quarter in your pocket right now. But more than 110 years ago, people would have had one of these Barber Quarters in their pocket. And if your travel all the way back to 1909 you’ll discover that it was the year former President Teddy Roosevelt ventured to Eastern Africa on behalf of the Smithsonian® in an expedition that garnered the Institute approximately 11,400 animal specimens and more than 10,000 plant specimens—a massive scientific haul that took 8 years to fully catalog!
From The Famous Barber Coinage Series
The quarters we have here not only pre-date the Washington Quarter, but were also struck before the Standing Liberty Quarter. They were designed by Charles E. Barber, the 6th Chief Engraver at the United States Mint, and were part of the famous Barber coinage series that featured the same portrait of Lady Liberty on the dime, quarter, and half dollar. The design shows Miss Liberty wearing a crown made of olive branches with a small headband inscribed with the word LIBERTY.
Key-Date Coin From The New Orleans Mint
The 1909-dated quarters we have here were all struck in highly pure 90% fine silver at the historic New Orleans Mint during the LAST year they were produced in the “Big Easy.” The New Orleans Mint closed its doors for good in April 1909, making these coins among the final coins ever struck at the fabled mint. With a low mintage of just 712,000, that figure represents less than 5% of all the Barber Quarters struck in 1909! In addition, the New Orleans Mint was never known for the quality of its strikes, but each one available here comes certified, graded, and encapsulated by the Numismatic Guaranty Company (NGC) as being in Good-6 (G6) condition, meaning the design is visible with full peripheral lettering and digits.
