1940-P Silver Mercury Dime NGC/PCGS MS66
Mercury Dimes Struck on the Eve of World War II
In 1940, on the eve of America’s entry into World War II, the United States was roaring forth from the ashes of the Great Depression. It was time when dime could purchase a comic book, a loaf of bread or two bottles of Coca-Cola. And, of course, the dime then in use was the famous and iconic Mercury Dime, one of the most classic designs in U.S. coin history.
Weinman’s Iconic — And Prophetic — “Freedom of Thought” Design
That design by Adolph A. Weinman was said to represent “Freedom of Thought,” a freedom that emboldened us as we fought against the AXIS Powers in World War II. They were called Mercury Dimes because the image of Liberty on the obverse resembled Mercury, the Roman god of trade, profit and commerce. Now you can obtain one of these artifacts of history struck more than 80 years ago. Plus, these 90% fine silver dimes have been certified by either the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) or the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) as being in Gem Uncirculated Mint State-66 (MS66) condition! Grading service varies.
COIN HIGHLIGHTS:
- BEAUTIFUL CLASSIC DESIGN – The Mercury Dime features the iconic image of Lady Liberty with a winged Phrygian cap that makes her look like the Roman god Mercury. Designed by Adolph A. Weinman, the image was so popular that when the U.S. Mint struck its first Palladium Eagle coin in 2017 it selected Weinman’s design!
- STRUCK IN HIGHLY-PURE SILVER – Mercury Dimes were struck in 2.5 grams of highly pure 90% fine silver and measure 17.9 mm in diameter.
- UNITED STATES LEGAL TENDER—The Mercury Dime was 10 cents legal tender in the United States at a time when a dime could purchase a Superman comic book, a loaf of bread or two bottles of Coca-Cola.
- GEM UNCIRCULATED CONDITION – Your 1940-P Mercury Dime has been graded by either the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) or the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) in Gem Uncirculated Mint State-66 (MS66) condition. Grading service varies.
