1964-P Silver Kennedy Half Dollar PCGS PR69
First-Year JFK Silver Half Dollar Proof
In November of 1963, the United States of America lost its president when John Fitzgerald Kennedy was assassinated. To honor the fallen president, the United States Mint replaced the Franklin Half Dollar the following year with the Kennedy Half Dollar. Americans lined the streets outside the Treasury building for their chance to own an uncirculated version of the coin, but the Mint also produced a special Proof version in its annual U.S. Proof Set — and now you can add it to your collection!
This first-year Kennedy Half Dollar Proof was struck in highly pure 90% fine silver — the only year the coin was struck in 90% silver — and has proven to be immensely popular over the years. In fact, we’ve never been able to offer them as we have here graded by the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) in near-perfect Proof-69 (PR69) condition, a distinction that means these almost-flawless coins showcase impressive full strikes and indistinguishable imperfections — well above and beyond the quality of the vast majority of coins in the series. In fact, the PCGS population report lists only 26 Kennedy Half Dollars of this date and mintmark in perfect Proof-70 condition!
Featuring U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Gilroy Roberts’ iconic bust of President John F. Kennedy, the 1964 Kennedy Half-Dollar was originally meant to be a one-year-only tribute to the fallen president. It proved to be so popular, however, that the U.S. Mint has issued it every year since. The coin’s reverse is a modified design of the Presidential Seal by Frank Gasparro, who replaced Roberts as the U.S. Mint’s Chief Engraver in 1965.
