Commemorative Silver Dollar Honors The “Little Rock Nine”

In 2007, the hate and venom spewed at schoolchildren due to the color of their skin seemed like something that had occurred a million years earlier. In reality, however, it had been only 50 years since the United States Supreme Court had declared that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional thus paving the way for the “Little Rock Nine” to become the first African American students to enter Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas. This coin released on the 50th Anniversary of that historic moment in our nation’s history recognizes and pays tribute to the strength, determination, and courage displayed by nine ordinary teenagers who walked out of their homes and stepped up to the front lines in the battle for civil rights for all Americans in the fall of 1957.

Simple-Yet-Powerful Design Pays Tribute To Desegregation In Education

The obverse of this coin features a simple-yet-powerful design that depicts the students, accompanied by an armed soldier, walking to school. The design includes nine stars symbolizing the students—Ernest Green, Elizabeth Eckford, Jefferson Thomas, Terrence Roberts, Carlotta Walls LaNier, Minnijean Brown, Gloria Ray Karlmark, Thelma Mothershed, and Melba Pattillo Beals—who faced the violence and hatred of a segregated society unwilling to live by the words of its most important declaration, that “all men are created equal.” The design is further augment by a legend that reads: “DESEGREGATION IN EDUCATION.” The coin’s reverse shows an image of Little Rock’s Central High School as it looked in 1957. The building, which still operates as an educational institution, was designated a National Historic Site in 1998.
