Silver Eagles Join the Fight Against COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic has touched almost everyone and even affected America’s money supply when the United States Mint was forced to temporarily shut down operations at its West Point Mint facility. During the spring of 2020, the U.S. Mint temporarily halted production of U.S. Silver Eagles at its usual mint of origin, the West Point Mint. In response, an Emergency Production run of Silver Eagles was struck in Philadelphia. Then, In the final months of 2020, with the U.S. Mint’s production of Silver Eagles still struggling to keep up with demand, a second Emergency Production run of bullion Silver Eagles was struck at the San Francisco Mint.

The San Francisco Mint to the Rescue

The news of the West Point Mint’s closure in 2020 from April 8-20 was met with concern across the coin collecting community and by silver stackers around the world because supplies of silver coins were already dwindling. And, since the West Point Mint is the U.S. Branch Mint that typically strikes American Silver Eagle bullion coins, folks were justifiably worried. What made matters worse was the fact that the COVID-19 pandemic ignited a silver-buying frenzy that saw the U.S. Mint struggling to keep up with demand long after the West Point Mint got back up and running. But Mint officials didn’t throw in the towel. Instead, in the fall of 2020 they began producing bullion Silver Eagles San Francisco to meet the demand.

Personally Signed by a Coin Legend

In this offer not only can you secure one of these 2020-dated American Silver Eagle bullion coins specially struck at the San Francisco Mint, but it comes encapsulated with a label signed by John Mercanti, the designer of the coin’s reverse! The U.S. Mint’s 12th Chief Engraver, Mercanti is a giant in the numismatic world, having produced more coin and medal designs than any person in U.S. Mint history.

Mint Identification Is Key

Since bullion Silver Eagles are struck without mintmarks, however, there’s no way collectors can know if their Silver Eagle is one of these “Emergency Production” releases. But thanks to our status within the coin world, we can! As an authorized re-seller of American Silver Eagles, we’ve been able to secure “monster boxes” that differentiate whether the coins were struck at the San Francisco Mint or the West Point Mint. Then, we sent the coins to the Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC), where they we certified, graded and pedigreed as being “Struck at San Francisco Mint” and “Emergency Production” issues.

Flawless High-Grade Emergency Production Silver Eagles

In addition, the Silver Eagles available in this offer have been graded by NGC as being in flawless Mint State-70 (MS70) condition, a distinction that means these perfectly-graded coins have ZERO imperfections — showing all features and fields exactly as the engraver and mint intended. Plus, NGC has certified that these Silver Eagles are First Day of Issue (FDI) coins, a designation that means they were received by NGC or an NGC-approved depository by the release date or on the business day within 24 hours of the official release date. Collectors seek out these coins because they are produced with new dies and considered to have sharper strikes and deeper mirrors than those that are struck later. Also, the population of coins labeled First Day of Issue is only a fraction of the total mintage. Each will also come sonically sealed in an acrylic holder with a unique black display core.

Just one million coins were produced at the San Francisco Mint during this second emergency production effort — but we were ready and managed to secure a sizable quantity. 2020 will certainly be a year to remember — secure an autographed version of one these already historic coins from the year the U.S. Mint struck not one, but TWO Emergency Production runs of Silver Eagles!
