Last Flight for the Silver Eagle’s Heraldic Eagle Design
America’s Silver Eagle is one of the most collected coins in the world. But now, after 35 years of excellence, this fantastic coin is about to get a makeover. Since its debut in 1986, it has always featured a stunning combination of Adolph A. Weinman’s classic Walking Liberty design on the obverse paired with John Mercanti’s Heraldic Eagle. But beginning later in 2021, Mercanti’s design will be no more — but not before the design is struck for one final time with the first Silver Eagles to take flight in 2021.
Final Release of John Mercanti’s Popular Design
You read that right; these 2021-dated Silver Eagles will be the final go-round for John Mercanti’s Heraldic Eagle design. That’s because the U.S. Mint had announced early in 2020 that would be replacing the design in 2021. Mint officials also confirmed that they would begin its production run of 2021 dated Silver Eagles with John Mercanti’s original reverse design and complete the 2021 run with the new reverse design. This coin was given a Type-1 pedigree to note that it bears the original Mercanti Heraldic Eagle Reverse design. This represents a monumental year for the Silver Eagle Series with a first and a last in the same year of the Mint’s most popular coin!
Signed By A Trio Of Coin Legends
Here you have a three-piece set this classic beauty struck at the U.S. Mint’s branch mint at West Point—one each signed by John Mercanti, Elizabeth Jones, and Edmund Moy. Mercanti, the U.S. Mint’s now-retired 12th Chief Engraver, has produced more coin and medal designs than any person in U.S. Mint history! Jones, the 11th Chief Engraver of the U.S. Mint, is still the only woman ever to serve as the Mint’s chief engraver. She served from 1981 to 1990 and oversaw two of the Mint’s most popular coin programs: The Gold and Silver Eagles. Moy, who served as the 38th Director of the U.S. Mint from 2006 to 2011, oversaw the launch of a number of popular modern coins including the America the Beautiful Quarters® Program.
