Complete Type Set of First-Year 1878 Morgan Silver Dollars

The Morgan Silver Dollar is one of the most iconic coins in U.S. history, created using silver mined from the famous Comstock Lode in Nevada. However, the coin got off to a bit of a rocky start. The Morgan Silver Dollars in this six-piece set include every 1878 Morgan version struck—including the difficult-to-find Carson City Morgan, as well as the Morgan struck in San Francisco and four struck in Philadelphia. Four? Why four you say? Well, read on Macduff!

Seven Tail Feathers? Eight? Mint Corrections Create Several Varieties

In 1878, the first year the coin was struck, the first coins of the mintage were from the Philadelphia Mint. On the reverse of these coins was an eagle displaying eight tail-feathers. However, sharp-eyed enthusiasts quickly pointed out that the eagle should only have seven! Mint Director Henry Linderman quickly ordered a change, resulting in both a “7 over 8” variety in which the replacement die was used to strike over the existing design, as well as a 7-tail-feather design. Other variations occurred, with the “7TF” variety displaying both “flat breast” and “round breast” versions of the eagle.
